When inertia works and when it does not work: Attach a thin thread to the coin up and down. If you pull the lower thread suddenly, the inertia of the coin will work, the lower thread will break and the coin will stay in place. If you pull it slowly, the upper thread will break without inertia. Isn't it fun for the teacher to take some and let the students expect and cut the other side?
